Just for Fun, Seriously:  Signs of Our Times

Prism Assembly--We are uncertain---and unknowledgeable--about the exact structure of these prism assemblies. There are some nice big pieces here. We can tell you that looking through the assembly at one face the image is inverted, while looking through another face, the image is correct. Of course, there are so many faces to this assembly we don't really know where the intended input and output sides are.

The structure you're looking at is approximately 4 1/2 x 5 x 4 inches. The optics are obviously coated. The housing is metal, not plastic. This item just reeks of quality. The assembly is an OEM device and the part number would be impossible to trace. The only words on the outer box were Minolta, Made In Japan, Prism Assemblies.

These prisms are sealed in their original containers. The prisms are in pristine condition and are classified "new condition" as further explained on our website's Grading Page.

This optical sub-assembly measures approximately 7 x 7 x 6 inches. The housing is a combination of metal and plastic. Various labels including "made in Japan," "Minolta," and "Nidec" can be found on various components. Included in this assembly is a rotating, dichroic filter wheel. This wheel spins freely inside the circular casing, and it contains some kind of electronic assembly, which we assume to be a motor and a small printed circuit card. This filter wheel measures approximately 4 1/4 inches in diameter.

These photos show a cluster of prisms, and what we think may at least one beam splitter, but we're not certain. The entire cluster measures approximately 3 x 4 x 2 inches. The large cube measures approximately 2 x 1 1/2 x 1 1/4 inches. We also think one of the components is an infrared filter mirror.

The large lens on the right measures approximately 2 1/4 inches in diameter with an aperture at the back of approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter. We think this is a condensor lens for light input.

There is another lens in this housing which has some interesting properties that are likely used in conjunction with the filter wheel. We did not take it apart any further.

The mirror (not shown) in this sub-assembly measures approximately 1 1/2 inches x 2 inches.
